Bullard High grads snag Emmys

It's an accomplishment to win back-to-back Emmy Awards and even more impressive when they are won in different categories.

Last year, Robert Vargas, a Bullard High graduate and former member of the Good Company Players, won the Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Main Title Design for the public television educational series "Word World." He picked up another Emmy this year for Outstanding Writing in Animation on that same series.

Vargas is living in Paris these days. I sent him an e-mail asking about the win.

"Is the second win as good as the first? Better, if that's possible! It was in one of the really competitive categories -- writing for animation -- so it felt reeeeeally good! Our show also won for 'Outstanding Preschool Series', besting a tough pack. All in all, I consider myself one lucky writer."

He wasn't the only Emmy-wining Bullard graduate this year: Marina Zenovich picked up Emmys for Outstanding Directing For Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction Programming for her documentary "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired."

Visiting with Dr.Phil

Elizabeth, Gypsy, Kiani and Serafino Wesson, plus local television news reporter Alysia Sofios, are guests on the "Dr. Phil" show to air at 3 p.m. today on KSEE (Channel 24.1). Their appearance comes after the release of "Where Hope Begins" (Pocket Books), the book Sofios wrote about her relationship with the family since the murder of nine family members more than five years ago. The show taped Wednesday.

Other news

More "Glee": It looks like Clovis East graduate Chris Colfer will get to keep his TV acting job for at least one year. His Fox television series, "Glee," has been given a full-season order to increase the number of episodes from 13 to what is traditionally 22 shows.

National attention: A crew from the WEtv Network's "Platinum Weddings" will be in Fresno Saturday for the Jerrica McDowell-Joseph Mah wedding. The show will air next year. The next episode of the cable show airs 4 a.m. Friday.
