Confession: I'm far more excited about what's happening after Halloween, than I am about regular ol' Halloween this year.
Why? Because the first part of November is bringing some hip concerts to our area -- a veritable nonstop run of awesome touring acts.
It's going to be what I, and music lovers like me, wish we had happening in this city all the time.
Not to say we don't get great shows, but when we do, they're a week or two apart, not five days in a row.
I'm giving you plenty of notice so there is none of the typical "How did I not know [fill in the blank] was coming to town?" moaning the day after the show.
This great concert stretch starts Nov. 5 when Little Dragon makes a return stop to Fresno.
If you don't know Little Dragon, know this: They're a Swedish pop/electro/soul group that played to a near sell-out crowd earlier this year at Audie's Olympic and is coming there again. These guys (and gal) are playing at swankier venues in hipper cities, so it's a treat they're coming back to Fresno.
On Nov. 6, a couple of legends are coming our way -- guitarist Leo Kottke is at the Tower Theatre while Exene Cervenka of iconic Los Angeles' punk band X is at Audie's Olympic.
Nov. 7, of course, brings Fresno's date with Jay-Z at Save Mart Center. It's a coup for Fresno, because we're one of only two California dates he has scheduled (the other is Nov. 8 in L.A.)
And as excited as I am to see Jay, I'm equally excited for his opening acts: Funk/rock band N.E.R.D. and buzzed-about new rappers J. Cole and Wale.
On Nov. 8, Audie's Olympic will be rocking once again when Cage the Elephant plays Fresno for the first time.
This Kentucky band had a breakthrough year in '09 with the release of its self-titled debut album and its single "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked," which was a hit on alternative rock radio.
Cage the Elephant has a not-too-hard, not-too-soft sound with elements of funk-rock and punk-rock. But you can totally sing along to it.
A lot of people already have Nov. 9 circled on their calendars. That's when über-catchy indie rock band Vampire Weekend is playing The Cellar Door in Visalia.
It already sold out -- and super quick at that. But is still a show we should be happy to have in our area. If you really want to go, better hit Craigslist or something.
From there, we can look forward to Eyes Set to Kill (Nov. 10 at Starline), "American Idol" winner David Cook (Nov. 12 at Table Mountain Casino), The Misfits (Nov. 15 at Crest Theatre), Flobots (Nov. 16 at Starline) and Kiss (Nov. 21 at Save Mart Center).
The moral of this is simple: We've got a great set of November concerts coming up. And when great shows come to town, people need to turn out.
If not, concert promoters will write off Fresno as a too-tough-to-crack market and route their shows elsewhere.
So if we want more cool concerts, it's up to us -- the concert-going public of Fresno -- to do our part.
