School is back in and in a few days it'll be September.
As we say bye-bye to summer and hello to fall, it's a good time to start looking forward to the rest of the year. Here's what's on my pop culture anticipation list:
New Super Mario Bros. Wii: Mario and Luigi, the favorite plumbers of video gamers everywhere, return in a new side-scrolling adventure for Nintendo's Wii. Sure, "Super Mario Galaxy" was cool, but this is how Mario games should be. No release date yet, but expect it in time for holiday shopping.
"Dexter": I've given a shout out to this show before, but it deserves all the love it can get. "Dexter" is the Showtime series about a police blood expert by day/serial killer by night. The fourth season debuts Sept. 27 with guest John Lithgow. If you haven't watched it before, don't worry about the new season, cue up Netflix and start at the beginning.
"Blueprint 3": Superstar rapper Jay-Z returns on Sept. 11 with "Blueprint 3," which promises to be one of the biggest albums of the year in any genre. Judging from the tracks that have leaked thus far, though, I think Brother Ali's "Us," (out Sept. 22) promises to be the better album.
"Community": I love Joel McHale (best known from E's "The Soup"), so I'll watch anything he's in. It just so happens that he's starring in a TV comedy about community college. Win all around. It debuts Sept. 17 on NBC.
Oct. 15: It appears that Thursday, Oct. 15 is the biggest concert date of the year for our fine city. Uber-popular country band Rascal Flatts is at Save Mart Center while Stone Temple Pilots rock the Big Fresno Fair.
Whip it! Before "(500) Days of Summer," I caught the preview for "Whip It!" the Drew Barrymore-directed, Ellen Page-starring roller derby movie. Considering that Fresno's derby team got me interested in the sport, this movie (out Oct. 2) is a must-see.
Jordan XIs: Yep, I'm the type of nerd who looks forward to sneaker release dates. In this case, it's my favorite shoe of all time -- the black-on-black, patent-leather-lined "Space Jam" version of Air Jordan XI, originally released in 1996 -- that is coming back Nov. 27. I'm already saving up.
Your turn: My wife wants pumpkin cheesecake. My editor can't wait for "New Moon," the sequel to the "Twilight" movie. Tons of folks are eager for football season.
So I know there is much more to look forward to this year. Stop by my blog at fresnobeehive.com and share your end-of-the-year anticipation list.
