When the Press Box opens on Saturday, it will bring a sports bar with 19 high-definition televisions to Figarden Loop. Expect to see all things sports, including Fresno State games, Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts, Mixed Martial Arts fights and professional boxing.

Such a theme brings up visions of burgers and fries, fried chicken fingers stuffed with bacon and cheddar cheese and 16 beers on tap.

In addition to those dishes and drinks, the Press Box has more upscale fare. "We feel that this side of town has been under-represented," says co-owner Tom Miller, who is also an investor in Yosemite Ranch. "My frustration has been driving to the other side of town to eat."

That's why the Press Box serves dishes such as spinach salad (spinach with roasted shallots, housemade applewood smoked bacon, vanilla-bean poached pears, hard cooked eggs and balsamic syrup) and marinated Atlantic salmon (served with asparagus, roasted pepper relish and melted shallots).

The 86-seat restaurant promotes the sports history of the central San Joaquin Valley. Its athletic memorabilia includes Pop Laval photos. And Miller has invited well-known Valley sports figures to opening day.

If you like hot wings, go there shortly after 4 p.m. The Press Box will select 10 guests for a wing-eating contest. The person to eat 20 wings in the shortest amount of time will win $500 in cash and assorted sports memorabilia.

For the first couple of weeks, hours will be 4 p.m.-midnight Mondays-Fridays, 3 p.m.-midnight Saturdays and 1-10 p.m. Sundays. Afterwards, the restaurant will add weekend brunches. Hours will be 9 a.m.-midnight Saturdays and 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Sundays.

The Press Box is at 6022 N. Fig Garden Drive. Call (559) 275-7777 for more information.

Yet another wine event takes place this weekend. The Blossom Trail wineries on the eastern side of Fresno County will host an open house noon-6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. They are Tivy Mountain Vintners, Cedar View Winery, Ramos Torres Winery and Metzler Family Farms.
