Restaurant gossip always is rampant, particularly when it comes to downtown Fresno. Here are a couple of behind-the-scenes tidbits that will lead to more visible changes:
Talk about the sale of Hero's Sports Lounge & Pizza Co. made some folks wonder about its future.
The sale divided the business at Van Ness Avenue and Inyo Street into two parts. Robert Williams, the original owner, now owns Hero's bar. Eric Jones, the kitchen manager, bought the restaurant portion.
To the customers, everything should look the same, says Kathy Hamilton, the restaurant manager who explained the new arrangement.
The owners are thinking of more lunch specials and changes in entertainment, but "it's still a sports bar," she says.
Hero's bar is open 11 a.m.-2 a.m. daily. (If nighttime business is slow, the bar closes earlier.)
Restaurant hours are 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sundays-Thursdays and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays. Call (559) 233-8866 for more information.
Carrie Vigil, owner of Coffi-n-More at Divisadero and Tuolumne streets, is trying to sell her business quickly.
Known for its sandwiches, such as Michael's special (turkey, ham, bacon, provolone cheese, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato on toasted wheat bread), and homemade brownies, Coffi-n-More has been serving downtown workers for 51/2 years, Vigil says. She's owned it for about two years.
"We don't want to leave," she says. "It's for personal reasons."
Earlier this year, Vigil's 5-year-old daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease, an intolerance of gluten -- a protein in wheat, barley or rye.
Coping with the disease means lots of time spent in doctors' offices that conflict with Coffi-n-More's hours.
"I'm wanting to sell as soon as possible," Vigil says.

And for bread lovers going on the Mariposa Agri-Nature Trail this weekend, go to JJ's Breads at 10 a.m. Sunday. JJ Gillispie, owner of JJ's, is teaching a Bread Making 101 class.
"I want to take some of the complicated part out of it," she says. "A lot of people are afraid to bake bread."
Guests will learn easy steps that require little more than a Kitchen-Aid mixer. They'll gain tips for making crisp crusts and get recommendations for flours.
A bread tasting is included.
