Where she lives: Near Road 37 and Avenue 12 in Madera Ranchos
Occupation: Retired teacher
Family: She has been married to Merle for 61 years. They have two children (one is deceased); a granddaughter, Charlene Anderson; and two great-grandsons, Stephen and Max
Why should we know her? Anderson was named Madera County Volunteer of the Year at the recent 16th Annual Celebration of Living Awards Luncheon at the Fresno Convention Center. The luncheon, hosted by the Fresno-Madera Area Agency on Aging, recognized Fresno and Madera County residents ages 60 and older.
Anderson has volunteered at the Ranchos branch of the Madera County Library for 15 years. She calls herself the "story lady" because she reads to children from 11 a.m. to noon every Monday. She used to check books in and out and shelve materials but says she's "slowed down a bit."
"The children are what I miss about teaching," Anderson says. "This way I get to see them. To see a child come out of her shell and sit with us in the story hour instead of hiding behind Mommy makes you feel so good."
Anderson also has volunteered for 15 years at the Ranchos/Hills Seniors center; she puts together the newsletter and calendar, serves as cashier at monthly bake sales and sometimes works behind the desk at the center.
What are some organizations she belongs to? Ranchos/Hills Seniors
What are her hobbies? Knitting, reading, family genealogy, Internet research.
What would she like to share with others? "Lend a helping hand to that shy person in the corner. You would be amazed at how much they can and will do if someone just approaches them."
