Each week, In a Fix takes a look at annoying and sometimes dangerous problems in the central San Joaquin Valley and reports on who is responsible for getting the problems fixed.
What needs to be fixed
Widen Peach Avenue and add sidewalks between Belmont Avenue and Huntington Boulevard
Vernon Azzaro sent an e-mail to The Bee regarding congested traffic along this two-lane stretch of Fresno road.
"Now that you can exit [Highway] 180 at Peach, Peach is a thoroughfare really -- and it really gets bad in the afternoons because you have Bakman [Elementary School], Sunnyside [High School], Easterby [Elementary School] and Kings Canyon [Middle School] in the area. It's bumper-to-bumper traffic in the afternoons; you can't get through there." Azzaro says traffic from the IRS, which is nearby, also adds to the congestion.
Azzaro says he's also concerned because there are no sidewalks. "The kids have to walk in the street and it's dangerous," he says.
Peach widens to two lanes past Huntington, where there also are sidewalks.
Assistant Public Works Manager Scott Mozier says widening Peach Avenue from Highway 180 south to Kings Canyon is a Measure C Tier 1 project (Tier 1 projects are high priority).
The project, which will include adding sidewalks, also is expected to receive Traffic Congestion Relief Program funds. It is expected to be completed in about five years from the date when Measure C Tier 1 funding becomes available; it is estimated that funding will be made available by 2010.
Who's responsible: Patrick Wiemiller, Public Works director, (559) 621-8650.
