Each week, In a Fix takes a look at annoying and sometimes dangerous problems in the central San Joaquin Valley and reports on who is responsible for getting the problems fixed.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED
Rough pavement on North Maroa Avenue between West Barstow and West Bullard avenues
Several readers contacted The Bee regarding the condition of this stretch of road.
James Butchert sent an e-mail calling it "the roughest, bumpiest main road in Fresno" and noting that "it is next to a popular church and a school."
St. Anthony of Padua Parish is on the southeast corner of Maroa and Bullard, and St. Anthony's School is just south of the church. Baird Middle School is on Maroa between Barstow and Browning avenues.
"Shaw to Barstow and Bullard to Herndon have been resurfaced in the past two years, but not the quarter mile of Barstow to Bullard," Donna Weppler writes in an e-mail. "Your car just shakes when you drive it."
Tom Smusz sent a letter, saying, "Wagon trails give you a better ride."
"Maroa is kind of a main artery from Shaw over to Herndon," he says. "It needs some help."
Smusz says he has complained to Fresno's Public Works Department several times this year.
The southbound lanes of Maroa belong to Fresno County. The northbound lanes belong to the city of Fresno. Both the north- and southbound lanes are filled with ridges, cracks and patched pavement.
Fresno Public Works Manager Brian Russell says the city is working with the county to develop a joint paving project to repair the street. The project is in its beginning planning stages and is not yet funded.
Who's responsible: Patrick Wiemiller, Public Works director, (559) 621-8650. Bob Palacios with the Fresno County Department of Public Works and Planning, (559) 262-4240.
