An underground storage facility for natural gas in western Fresno County was approved for construction by the California Public Utilities Commission.

Gill Ranch Storage LLC received approval Thursday for its plans for storing about 20 billion cubic feet of natural gas in an area about 10 miles east of Mendota and 20 miles west of Fresno. Much of the area is in Madera County. The facility will be jointly owned by Gill Ranch Storage and Pacific Gas & Electric Co.

The 5,020-acre site is an area of depleted natural gas fields in geologic formations that will now be used for storage. A Gill Ranch spokesman said the company hopes to begin construction before the end of this year and have the site operational next summer.
