Fresno ranked 15th in the nation in foreclosures last quarter, with one in every 52 houses receiving a default notice, according to RealtyTrac, which monitors such activity.

The 5,860 houses getting a foreclosure notice last quarter represented a decline of 7.75% from the previous quarter -- but an increase of 16.5% from third quarter 2008.

Several California regions fared worse. In Merced, one of every 27 homes received a foreclosure notice. Those 3,092 houses represented a decline of 13% from the previous quarter and a dip of 11.1% from a year previously.

Merced ranked second in the nation in foreclosure notices behind Las Vegas, where one of every 20 housing units received a notice of default. Stockton, Modesto, Riverside/San Bernardino and Bakersfield were fourth through seventh.
