A $2 million state grant will help train people in the San Joaquin Valley to work in water technology, renewable energy, food processing, agriculture technology and biotechnology -- industries closely tied to the region's farming economy.
The grant comes from the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency and goes to the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley. Workers will be trained in basic job skills, English and computer literacy.
In announcing the grant, officials said the goal is to provide people with the skills for jobs that, despite the Valley's high unemployment rate, go unfilled.
