Five Fresno hospitals received "best" ratings in an annual report released Tuesday by HealthGrades, an independent health-care rating organization.
Saint Agnes Medical Center, Community Regional Medical Center, Community Health Center, Fresno Surgical Hospital and Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital received five-star best ratings in some of the 28 categories in which HealthGrades rates hospitals.
The ratings were determined using nearly 40 million Medicare hospitalization records from 2006, 2007 and 2008. Patients can use the information to choose which hospital to go to for specific procedures and treatments, said HealthGrades spokesman Scott Shapiro.
The ratings are vastly different among some hospitals, Shapiro said. The difference between a one-star rating and a five-star rating can mean a patient is 70% less likely to die from that procedure.
Kaiser Permanente Medical Center was not included in the survey because much of its data is from Medicare HMO records to which HealthGrades did not have access.
