Previously, he was editor of Fresno Neighbors, a zoned, weekly 85,000-circulation newspaper published by The Bee, for three years. From 1988 through 1990, he was a reporter covering local government and environmental issues for The Selma Enterprise and The Kingsburg Recorder. After a brief stint as a reporter covering environmental issues for The Hanford Sentinel in early 1991, he returned to serve as managing editor of The Enterprise and Recorder from mid-1991 to early 1998.
