ESCAPING SMOG: The Shaw family

Background: Dr. Brian Shaw, 51, is a orthopedist. His wife, Lisa, 49, is a nurse. Both worked at Children's Hospital Central California in Madera County.

Why they left: There were weeks when Brian needed six or seven medicines to help him breathe. And on days from October to February, he had to carry an inhaler on the long runs he took to stay in shape. Moderate to severe asthma also kept his four adopted children from participating in sports. One daughter needed two sinus surgeries.

Now: The Shaw family moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., four years ago. Brian no longer needs asthma medicine. His children play sports and don't use inhalers. "Healthwise, there's no question this was a good move for us," he said. But it was hard to leave the Valley, where Brian served as president of the Fresno- Madera Medical Society in 2003.
