Kubo the police dog is being credited by Fresno police with the capture of 11 people after an attempted burglary at Herb Bauer Sporting Goods store in north Fresno.
Officers were alerted to the break-in at the store in the 6200 block of North Blackstone Avenue, which stocks a large number of firearms, at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Sgt. Mike Manfredi said.
There was no apparent sign of a forced entry at either the storefront or the roof, but Kubo pointed officers to the attic area.
After a two-hour search, a 19-year-old man and his 17-year-old companion were found in a small area of the attic with five backpacks full of merchandise, as well as a cell phone.
Officers learned that a 20-year-old confederate had escaped, and that the two were receiving text messages from a lookout as police searched the store.
Officers pretended to be the burglars and used a cell phone to contact the lookout and arrest him and a juvenile companion.
Officers also located the escaped suspect using the cell phone and learned that stolen property was at a home near Tulare Street and Maple Avenue, where officers arrested six more people and recovered several thousand dollars worth of stolen property.
