Serena sets prize money record

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Serena Williams set a new single- season record on the WTA Tour by earning more than $6.5 million in prize money this year.

The old record was held by Justine Henin, who earned just under $5.5 million two years ago.

Serena, who ended this season at No. 1, completed here 2009 campaign by going 5-0 at last week's season-ending Championships, where she beat her older sister Venus twice during the week, including a straight-set decision in the lucrative final.

The 11-time major champion Serena's '09 season also included Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

The 27-year-old American superstar also holds the all-time prize money record among the ladies, with over $28.5 million earned.
