Karina Herrera, a Sunnyside High School graduate, had the winning essay in the Campaign for College Opportunity's "Save Me a Spot in College" contest.
Herrera won a $2,500 scholarship -- the grand prize in the written word category -- for an essay about her deep appreciation for education as a child of Mexican farmworkers in the Valley. She is attending Harvard University and plans to major in mechanical engineering. Herrera is the first in her family to go to college.
The Campaign for College Opportunity program, in partnership with the California Department of Education, sponsors the contest for sixth- through 12th-grade students who provide an essay, poster or television submission that answers the question "Why should California leaders save me a spot in college?"
