University of California at Merced's No. 2 leader is going to continue as the school's top fill-in worker.
Keith E. Alley has agreed to stay on as UC Merced's executive vice chancellor and provost, a school spokeswoman said.
He has held the position since June 2006, when the university's former chancellor and former executive vice chancellor resigned their posts within a two-month period. In paperwork filed for last week's UC Board of Regents meeting in San Francisco, UC Merced Chancellor Steve Kang said he plans to keep Alley on for up to three more years.
In an e-mail to the campus community, Kang said the three-year window will give him time to search for Alley's successor and "enable UC Merced to further mature and achieve a strengthened financial base."
UC Merced conducted a national search to fill Alley's position last fall, but the search process ended after the leading candidate withdrew interest.
The reappointment is effective through June 30, 2012, and allows for a three-month overlap in service by Alley and his replacement when one is hired.
Alley will receive a salary of $240,500. Under the new contract, Alley will also receive standard pension, health and welfare benefits, in addition to UC's "standard senior management benefits" which include senior management life insurance, executive business travel insurance and executive salary continuation for disability. A $743 monthly cash allowance for a vehicle is also included.
Alley has worked at the university since 2002, when he became the founding vice chancellor for research and dean of graduate studies.
In 2005, with the departure of Lindsay Desrochers, Alley took the interim position as vice chancellor of administration.
When former executive vice chancellor and provost David Ashley left in 2006, Alley stepped up as interim provost. Alley also briefly operated as interim chancellor -- though he never took such a title -- when founding Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey left in September 2006.
