Central Unified School District's new interim superintendent was appointed Tuesday night, but he probably won't spend much time in the job.
Minutes after naming Chuck McCully as the district's interim leader on a 6-1 vote, the school board voted to hire the Fresno County Office of Education to lead the search for a permanent superintendent.
McCully, a retired Fresno Unified School District superintendent, said he was happy to serve in Central Unified as long as the district needed him.
"My commitment is to serve until they select a permanent superintendent, and that person can get here and settle in," McCully said.
McCully will make about $11,000 a month as he fills in for Marilou Ryder, who resigned at the end of June.
McCully was welcomed by most of the board as a capable leader. Board Member Judith Geringer, who cast the only vote against hiring McCully, said she would have preferred to promote someone temporarily from within the district.
"I think we have in-house candidates who are fully qualified to hit the ground running as interim superintendent," Geringer said. "With the budget situation being what it is, that would have been more prudent."
In June the school board approved a $140 million budget that cut many vacant or temporary positions to save money.
Board Member Diana Milla said she supported McCully but agreed with Geringer on the qualifications of internal candidates. The two cast the votes against paying the Fresno County Office of Education a flat rate of $5,000 to find Ryder's replacement.
"I think the wisest thing to do would be to find out if any of our three excellent assistant superintendents are interested in the job," Milla said.
Other board members said they wanted to conduct a search, in part to give members of the public a chance to voice their opinions.
"My thought is that the firm we hire to do the search can help us find qualified people in the district, and run the most open search for those candidates," said board member George Wilson, Jr.
