A team of students from McCabe Junior High School in Mendota placed second in a national engineering design competition held last month in Denver.
The team -- made up of students Luis Escobar, Angel Hernandez, Alexis Pena and Karina Torres -- competed in the Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement finals against six other state winners in the junior high/middle school division.
It was the second straight year McCabe students advanced to the national contest. Last year's team won the national title.
Participants designed and built a trebuchet, similar to a catapult, that was judged on distance and accuracy. They were also judged on knowledge of math and physics principles behind the device.
Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement provides academic preparation to encourage disadvantaged students to attend college. The McCabe program is coordinated through a program at Fresno State headed by Louis Lopez.
