Ryan McCaughey, manager of grounds and the arboretum at Fresno State, said the school became one of three universities in the state to be designated a Tree Campus USA member.

The other two are UC Davis and UC San Diego. Friday's observance of National Arbor Day consisted of planting 54 varieties of maple trees and helped the school meet Tree Campus USA requirements.

More than 60 volunteers including campus staff, students, university supporters and the public began planting the trees at noon and were finished by 1 p.m.

Ron Nishinaka, projects director of Tree Fresno, said, "It was a fantastic turnout and will make a big difference in cooling temperatures and cleaning the air on campus."

Janet Fortune, executive director of Tree Fresno, said Tree Fresno, the San Joaquin River Parkway and the Sierra Foothill Conservancy will plant 30 trees along the Riverpark Trail this morning in observance of Arbor Day.
