Edison High School's dominance in the Fresno County Academic Decathlon continued Saturday as the southwest Fresno school won the championship for the 13th straight year.
Edison's win capped the daylong event at Clovis East High School in which 24 schools competed.
The competition culminated with the Super Quiz. Students and parents filled the school's east gymnasium to cheer the decathlon contestants.
"It was the most invigorating experience I can remember," said Alex Peterson, 16, a member of the University High School team. Alex, a senior, did his part to add to the thunderous roars with every correct question.
"I just jumped up and screamed at the top of my lungs," he said. "I've never screamed this loud, even at concerts."
For Clovis North High School, a campus of only freshmen and sophomores, its first Academic Decathlon was an eye-opener, but a good experience nonetheless, team members said. Clovis North sophomore Lina Pham, 16, said she was a bit nervous during the Super Quiz. "It's a lot of pressure because all your teammates are counting on you," she said.
Fresno County schools participated in the speech, interview and essay competitions Jan. 31 at California State University, Fresno, which were part of the decathlon.
Madera, Kings and Tulare counties also held their Academic Decathlons on Saturday. Each county's overall winning team will have a chance to compete in the state decathlon in mid-March in Sacramento.
