Family feud for the 30th district
If the Florez and Parra families didn't hate each other so much, next year's legislative elections in the San Joaquin Valley would be boring. But now the chief instigators in the feud, state Sen. Dean Florez and former Assembly Member Nicole Parra, are dragging their parents into the ruckus.
Florez's mother will be challenged by Parra's father for the Democratic nomination in 30th Assembly District, which was Parra's old seat. The dream matchup between Dean Florez and Nicole Parra never materialized in an actual election so they are throwing their mommy and daddy into the political fire.
The mature thing would be to tell the Florez and Parra families to grow up, and settle their dispute so we all don't have to watch the train wreck. I've been in that camp until recently. But that's not going to happen so we might as well accept the Jerry Springer Show quality of the Florez/Parra relationship.

Parra to endorse GOP's Gilmore for Assembly
SACRAMENTO -- Hanford Democrat Nicole Parra will cross party lines to endorse a Republican to fill her Assembly seat next year, she said Friday.
Parra's support of Danny Gilmore angered Democratic Party leaders, but comes as no surprise because she has been praising Gilmore for months.
"I will endorse Danny Gilmore in the near future and I will campaign for him and do commercials," Parra said in an interview. Gilmore, a retired California Highway Patrol officer from Hanford, is running against Democrat Fran Florez, mother of state Sen. Dean Florez, D-Shafter, a longtime Parra rival.

Gilmore leads Florez in tight Assembly race
Republicans appear on the cusp of winning a South Valley state Assembly seat they have sought for years.
The GOP’s Danny Gilmore, a retired highway patrolman from Hanford, held a 51.7% to 48.3% lead over Democrat Fran Florez, mother of state Sen. Dean Florez, with all precinct votes in Wednesday morning. Gilmore led by more than 2,000 votes.
The Florez campaign was not ready to concede, however, saying as many as 7,000 absentee votes still had to be counted in Kern County, where Florez was claiming 65% of the vote.

Parra, Florez families to rekindle old rivalry
SACRAMENTO -- Pete Parra, father of former Assembly Member Nicole Parra, said Tuesday that he's going to challenge Sen. Dean Florez's mother, Fran, for a South Valley Assembly seat.
The Democratic primary matchup in June will pit two families that have feuded for years. Parra's intentions also signal that Republican incumbent Danny Gilmore probably is not running again.
Gilmore beat Fran Florez for the seat two years ago but issued a statement last week indicating he is leaning against seeking a second term. Pete and Nicole Parra are allies of Gilmore.
