Why do you write? Because I care about this country and believe that if each of us stands up for our rights and the rights of others we can make this country the envy of the world.

Topic that doesn't get enough attention: The injustice and futility of war.

Excerpt from recent letter: "Headlining issues like working mothers, right-to-life, creationism and lipstick in the presidential campaign distracts us from the real issues -- health care access, the economy, unemployment, housing, environment, terrorism and education.

"Let's not 'fiddle around' or 're-arrange deck chairs' while our domestic, national and international future is at risk."

Reaction to letters: Primarily supportive.

Education: Masters degrees in public administration, theology and canon law.

Family: Married to Linda Garcia Traynor; son; stepdaughter; three grandchildren.

Political philosophy: I'm a progressive world citizen who believes it is our duty to work with elected officials, regardless of party, to create a society that assures every family access to health care, a home, education, a living wage and a safe and environmentally healthy community.
