Jason Roche

Age: 35

Occupation: I have taught high school English for the past 10 years, teach writing at the University of Phoenix and teacher education at Fresno Pacific University.

Hobbies: I am undoubtedly a super nerd. I love science fiction, video games and my Mac computer.

Bee reader since: 2000.

How many letters: Nine since 2006.

Favorite topics: Writing about the troubled state of education.

Why do you write? Students deserve more from the adults that run our educational system. I believe the simple-minded accountability model that controls the fates of our kids is misguided and, in many respects, immoral. These letters provide me a forum for the dissent so desperately needed.

Education: Bachelor's degree in history, UC Davis; master's curriculum and instruction from National University; currently working on my thesis for a master's of reading and language arts from Fresno Pacific University.

Family: Wife, Cari; 1-year-old son, Cayleb; three dogs and two cats.

Political philosophy: Let's put it this way: Proposition 8 is an insult to equality, and the day President George W. Bush left office was a happy, happy day.
