Facts about CHP tickets
I would like to respond to the letter [Sept. 10] Rick Hulse. Mr. Hulse states that California Highway Patrol officers are exempt from being furloughed because “they generate money for the state by writing “us all” tickets.
If Mr. Hulse did his homework, he would know that the money generated by tickets that CHP officers write goes to the county or city that the ticket is written in. The CHP doesn’t see one penny of the money generated by the ticket. Also, the tickets that “us all” receive from the CHP are for breaking something called “the law.”
If you live in California, you have seen the aggressive, reckless way that people drive on a regular basis. Imagine how dangerous it would be to drive our roadways if there were no fear of seeing those red lights in you rear view mirror. Who needs to get it straight?

DESPAIRING? EDUCATION/TRAINING? UPTIGHT?
SCHEDULE
Q: Dear Dr. Culp, I read an article in the New York Times about a group of unemployed white-collar workers who meet to support each other in their job search. None of them know anyone who’s been hired in the last three months. What good does it do to job hunt in this climate? Ranting
A: Dear Ranting, Job hunting is always uncertain, more so in this recession. However, if you do nothing, employers won’t even know that you’re there. You have to hang on and keep the train whistle blowing down the track if for no other reason that you’ll find something you weren’t even looking for.

Someone out there reads all the letters to Santa
Each year, letters to Santa -- scribbled and sealed tight (children really seem to like glue) -- arrive at local post offices.
For more than 25 years in Fresno, postal workers have volunteered to open the wistful missives, sending a colorful form letter back from "your friend Santa." Sometimes they're moved by the lives of children who write.
Postal clerk Susan Ward, coordinator of the letter-opening effort, is surrounded by exuberant lists of untamed avarice as well as letters from children who expect few presents. This year, more letters than ever explain to Santa that parents have no money and it would be great if he could help out a little.

Bee reader since: 1993
How many letters: 10 since 2007.
Favorite topics: Injustice in the world, and state and national politics.
Why do you write? I react to writers I disagree with or who got facts wrong. I also write to offer alternatives to problems.
Reaction to letters: I have only had a couple of reactions from other readers printed in The Bee. Friends and relatives are very supportive (or so they say).
Topic that doesn't get enough attention: HIV and AIDS in the black community.
Excerpt from recent letter: "The Wells Fargo junket to Las Vegas was outrageous. The bank claims no bailout money would have been used. But money is fungible, which means it is interchangeable and one dollar is the same as another dollar.
"When you use money for a junket, you are inevitably spending from the big pool of money available, no matter what accounting gimmicks you use ... . It is all money from the same big pot."
Education: Bachelor's in Sociology from California State University, Long Beach. Graduated from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey where I studied Korean while in the U.S. Air Force. I also served in Vietnam.
Family: Not married, but recently celebrated 20 years with the same woman, who is also my best friend. Two brothers and a twin sister. We have a close family including both my father and mother.
Political philosophy: Socially very liberal, but fiscally fairly conservative. I supported Barry Goldwater, but I don't think he would recognize the new GOP that turned a surplus under Bill Clinton into a massive deficit. I was an early supporter of Barack Obama and I think he is going to be an outstanding president.
