Hobbies: Singing with Fresno Choral Artists and St. Columba Church Choir; sports car racing (late '60s) and collecting; cooking; collector/operator Lionel trains.
Bee reader since: 1965
How many letters: 23 since 1990.
Favorite topics: Economic effects of environmental and governmental mandates on transportation, agriculture and social structure.
Why do you write? To express my opinions and to hopefully cause others to consider the points I try to make.
Excerpt from recent letter: "There were two articles on the use of rail for intercity transport and another on the ethanol boondoggle. Their content basically supports the positions taken in my letters over the years.
"Now there is one more roadblock we must overcome --the environmentalists. If these people are serious about reducing pollution and congestion, then they must not stand in the way of the construction of a modern rail system. They simply can't have it both ways."
Topic that doesn't get enough attention: Continued and relentless government getting into every facet of our lives. Where is individual responsibility?
Education: Bachelor's degree from Arizona State University, 1957. Continuing education in the field of ag chemicals to maintain license during my career.
Family: Wife, Barbara; five children; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren -- most in the Fresno area.
Political philosophy: Conservative -- keep government in the role of national defense, infrastructure, public safety, and out of social/economic engineering. I believe in broad individual freedom, when complemented by equal individual responsibility.
