Dry spell for sitcom hits has format on critical list
Jenna Elfman's new CBS comedy "Accidentally on Purpose" launches tonight, one of eight new half-hour comedies on the five network schedules this fall.
Combined with returning comedies, there will be 20 half-hour network comedies on the air. A decade ago that number was 46 and five years ago it was 38. There were 24 comedies on the air when there were only three networks in 1983, the year TV comedies were declared dead before "The Cosby Show" ignited a resurgence.
The situation comedy format is again on the critical list with the failure in recent years to find a hit and the shrinking availability of the genre with the growing reality show market.

No, really: Onion, Comedy Central team on TV pilot
ESPN had better watch its back.
Comedy Central has ordered a pilot from the satirical news magazine The Onion.
The prospective half-hour scripted series will be based on The Onion's Sports Network, an online video series that parodies sports shows - especially those on ESPN.
