Funding derails Fresno State lecture program for the academic year.
A popular lecture series that has put former U.S. presidents, Pulitzer Prize winners and Hollywood filmmakers on stage at California State University, Fresno, has been shelved for now.
The University Lecture Series program has been suspended for the 2009-2010 academic year because of a recent funding gap of $44 million at Fresno State.
The series usually begins in September or October and continues over several months. Ben Stein’s talk March 19 ended the 2008-09 season. The program is operated by the university’s office of the provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Men's ministry renovates house
It's always encouraging to see the area's ministries rallying their troops to accomplish big community tasks.
Take, for example, Northside Christian Church's men's ministry program Special Forces.
About a year ago, a dozen men gathered at the coast to brainstorm how they could make a difference and grow. They decided to tackle a project every fall or spring. "Something significant in the community," says the men's ministry director, Gary Olsby.

'Slick advertising'
The topic of nuclear energy, even in our own back yard, is controversial enough without introducing slick advertising into the scene. The large ad presented in The Bee's Local State section Feb. 16 promoted a lecture titled "Searching for a Sustainable Energy Future" by Patrick Moore, Ph.D., a co-founder of Greenpeace.
After further research, it can be noted that Patrick Moore has since disassociated himself with Greenpeace and is currently promoting nuclear energy, clearly a position quite different from the Greenpeace organization itself. Additionally, even his claim to be a Greenpeace co-founder is controversial.
This advertising style is not a positive reflection on the lecture's sponsors, which included the Fresno Nuclear Energy Group; California State University, Fresno; K-Jewel; Pipe Trades Council; and the Fresno Area Construction Trades.
"Fresno State lands a fortunate event" said The Bee headline [March 26]. Yes, kudos to the university. The headline refers to Daniel Handler, better known as Lemony Snicket, the author of "A Series of Unfortunate Events," about the three Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sunny, who manage to cleverly escape the many traps set by the unscrupulous Count Olaf who is after their fortune.
Handler spoke at the University Lecture Series on March 27 to a capacity crowd of children and adults. He used the clever and witty dialogue for which he is known in his writing, with a little self-deprecating humor thrown in, to keep a multi-generational audience laughing and engaged for an hour. It was wonderful to see both children and adults lined up afterward to ask him questions.
We thank Provost Jeri Echeverrķa and Dr. Dianne Dickerson for having the courage to bring a children's author to Fresno for the University Lecture Series. I hope that the success of "An Evening with Daniel Handler" will encourage them to invite other children's authors.
