Political correctness gone amok: On March 11, I read in the Local section about a child who was suspended for a day for using a particular phrase. This got me to thinking again on the subject and I'm left wondering: Since when did political correctness trump the First Amendment of the Constitution? And who decided that the First Amendment is null and void?
I was taught in school that freedom of speech was there to protect us so that we may discuss unpopular ideas without fear of government prosecution. But today, we can no longer use certain terms without reprisal.
Maybe this coming election, the First Amendment should be the among the highest topics. When questioning the candidates, we need to ask where they stand on the people's rights to freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly and to petition the government.
