The Jan. 13 picture of the Acehnese woman being caned (flogged) in Indonesia was very disturbing. I had just read "Price of Honor" (a New York Times notable book) by Jan Goodwin that spells out the role of women in Islamic-controlled countries. The picture raised many questions in my mind which were not answered by the caption:
Did she violate the dress code? Did her head scarf slip revealing her natural hair? Did she commit adultery? Was she raped?
Was she given a virginity test? Did she not have money to pay a fine? Did she serve alcohol at a party?
How many lashes did she receive? Was she to be jailed following the flogging? Does she have children? If so, were they in the crowd?
And where was Human Rights Watch?
