In “Health reform right thing” [letter Oct. 29], Edward Brennan chastises religious leaders for remaining silent when we “have a rare opportunity to save tens of thousands of lives, and improve the health and quality of life for millions” by supporting “comprehensive health care reform.”
Explaining this silence of religious leaders is the Non Sequitur cartoon of the same date in The Bee: God and an angel watch a multitude enter a gate to Heaven marked “Right Religion Entrance.” No one uses the entrance marked “Wrong Religion Entrance.” God comments, “The funny thing is, none of them ever get the joke.”
The joke is that although one’s religion does not determine who enters Heaven, the crowd entering the gate marked “Right Religion Entrance” believes otherwise. This belief in the superiority of one’s religion breeds divisions that lead to conflicts.
These conflicts cause us, in Mr. Brennan’s words, to “ignore our sacred writings and traditions that command us to be compassionate.” He concludes, “Do the right thing according to your faith.” This may well be God’s only requirement for entering Heaven, as the cartoon implies.
