I took on a position as a traveling therapist to broaden my horizons. When told my first assignment would be Fresno, the destination fell to the floor with a “thud.” Would I grow in Fresno?
I began work at Fresno Rehabilitation Center. I bonded with patients and coworkers who were grateful for my assistance. I saw what Fresno lacked in glitz and glamour it made up for with kindness and sincere attitudes.
From another patient, I learned the importance of friendships. Unhappy with her state of health, we would laugh and share stories in between therapy. I felt joy when she stood for the first time. In turn, she became so excited when I had a date.
I also learned about compassion. One elderly patient had Alzheimer’s disease. This is a progressive disease in which the patient forgets more with each passing day. Every morning her tear-stained face asked “Where am I? Where is my family?” I would hold her and gently whisper “You’re safe. I’m here for you.” She would squeeze my hand and say “My friend, I’d be lost without you.”
I learned so much in Fresno that I shall cherish and carry with me on future endeavors.
