Regarding Jim Boren’s Oct. 25 column, “Dim future lies ahead for state’s colleges: Times are tough for college students. No educator wants to see qualified students turned away from the institution of their choice.
It is a tragedy to watch as the CSU and UC systems’ financial issues have involuntarily deterred and derailed students’ education goals. It would be a greater tragedy, however, if a battle between private and public universities hindered students’ access to all higher education options available to them.
Let’s not forget the greater goal here — to educate bright young minds. Students must know that there are private universities in California equipped to instill them with an education equal to what the state system provides.
In Central California alone, University of Phoenix has campuses in Fresno, Bakersfield and Visalia. Each offers campus-based as well as online degree programs. Students looking to transfer from a community college, those graduating from high school, or those currently enrolled and unable to get into classes need to know they still have options.
Public and private universities share a responsibility to work together, and now more than ever we need to come together to ensure that our students don’t miss out on all higher education opportunities.
