I’ve been paying close attention to the debate concerning health care in the U.S., and it appears to me that insurance companies are unfairly taking the brunt of the assault.
Although I have no great love for the insurance industry, I think something has been missing from the discussion, and that is the cost of medical care itself. As someone who recently lost a loved one to cancer, after a very lengthy battle, I feel somewhat qualified to offer my two cents worth.
A two-hour chemotherapy session can cost several thousand dollars. How can it possibly cost that much to sit in a chair and have a few ounces of liquid pumped into your veins? A radiation procedure lasting less than an hour can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Why? I would like to know what the justification is for these kinds of charges. For crying out loud, my wife wasn’t shopping for a new car, she was fighting for her life!
There are huge amounts of money being made by some people in the medical and pharmaceutical industries and unless the government can do something to get these outrageous fees under control, everyone is just spinning their wheels.
