Regarding the new hate-crime law signed by President Obama that now includes gays and the disabled [story Oct. 29]:

Conservatives claim it could silence the clergy who give sermons against homosexuality and creates a special class of victims.

Gays already are a special class of victims to those who have been taught by the clergy to hate them. Clergy use hate words such as evil, deviant, abomination, sinful, aberrant, grievous and more.

Perhaps the time has come for preachers to begin teaching love, instead of hate, in accordance with the true Biblical purpose to: Love thy neighbor as thyself; Judge not, lest you be judged; Love is as strong as death; Love worketh no ill, and The God of love shall be with you.

My Bible has a book called Proverbs, 1:22, which teaches this: How long ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

Isn't it time for conservatives and the clergy to take another look at the differences between love and hate?
