Former City Council Member Garry Bredefeld’s commentary on Oct. 26 was an eye opener for those who have not heard the rest of the story about Fresno’s downtown stadium.

I was asked in 2000 by then City Council Member Mike Briggs to attend several meetings with the owners of the Grizzlies baseball team. The city tried several times to find out the financial strength of the ownership group.

As an accountant, I asked to see the owner’s financial statements. The response we got was that financial statements were proprietary information, and they were not at liberty to share it with us or the city.

I remember someone in the group asking if the city was buying a pig in a poke. I applaud Mayor Ashley Swearengin’s professional approach to the issue at hand.
