The mural controversy that evolved into painting over a masterful piece of cultural art is sad! It reveals that prejudice and lack of respect for another culture and their outstanding art is a still evident in our community.
This should not be tolerated not only by a community of people but especially by a community that calls itself Christian. Also allowing the mural to be painted over gives a major victory to the vandals who desecrated the mural.
The artists who created the art must have been devastated to witness the work being painted over. Art is a means of expression and is meant to be free and creative.
The above scenario could have been resolved in far better ways instead of the way it has been handled. The vandals should be found and held accountable for their actions. This incident should bring the community together to discuss cultural matters that profoundly affect the conflicts in the community and work together to resolve them.
Christian Vargas should be honored for his great expression of art. Instead he and his art are being desecrated. This is a crime against his sense of humanity and his cultural community.
