In April, my health insurance premium increased 45% from the previous year to $875 a month. I had not even seen a doctor in the previous two years. I use less than $250 per year on prescription drugs. This is an example of greed, arbitrariness and abuse by the health insurance industry. If you think this can’t happen to you, just wait. Salaries have remained basically flat precisely because of insurance costs.
Different polls indicate a strong majority (57% to 72%) of Americans and 73% of doctors nationwide support a non-profit public option like Medicare. These numbers reflect all Americans: Republicans, Democrats and independents precisely because they have seen what I have experienced: increased premiums or rescinded coverage.
The only thing that will stop this kind of abuse is the competition that a public option provides.
Don’t be fooled by the rants of astroturfers who are organized by fronts for the health insurance industry. E-mail your senator and member of congress. Demand that that they represent your interests — not the health insurance industry.
