The recent passing of Soupy Sales brings back some old memories to me of Soupy’s early days.
Back in the 1950s when we lived in Michigan, we were introduced to Soupy. At that time, he was a weather man for a Detroit TV station. Even then, he inserted humor into his weather reports. Soupy always used the Upper Peninsula town of Engadine as his “Coldest Spot” in Michigan and always pronounced it as Engading, Ding, Ding.
It’s strange to believe that early career starts as weather men led to great futures. Another notable example is Pat Sajak, who was the weather man on the NBC channel in Los Angeles and whose compatriots on the 6 p.m. news were Tom Brokaw, Bryant Gumble and a female reporter who also went on to bigger things.
You don’t have to be a meteorologist to be a weather man on TV. But being a TV weather man is sure a good step forward in showbiz.
