One of the key transformations taking place is the growing awareness by all who toil in both the private and public sectors that each must pull their own oar if we are to restore this region to a healthy and rigorous economy. Despite the recent cheap shot by the leadership of the deputy sheriffs’ union against the city of Fresno, it has been our public employees, mostly union members, who are leading the charge for accountability. Many are in a silent rebellion against their stringent leadership.

Foremost among this group are our unionized educators. More and more, these committed classroom professionals are increasing the pressure upon those among them who advocate doing just enough to get by to look for an alternative career.

In that same vein, credit is due to those state and federal workers who have been granted “furlough” days because of budgeting shortfalls. Many of these dedicated individuals are finding ways to use the unpaid vacation days in charitable activities either within their own occupation or elsewhere. They, too, are continuing to pull an oar. As someone once said: “Those who row the boat don’t have time to rock it.”
