I am an elementary school librarian for the Fresno Unified School District and I am also the Accelerated Reader coordinator for my school. I helped to implement this program more than 12 years ago.

We have used this program with great success at our school. I read the commentary, "Testing program takes fun out of reading" on Oct. 17 and I felt that I had to set the record straight.

Not only did my daughter attend the Clovis Unified School District, but I have friends that teach there who use the AR program. I have received many calls over the years from my frustrated friends about this very issue.

It is my opinion that Clovis Unified does not use the program as it was intended. This program is a "tool" and just that! It is in no way supposed to be used as part of their reading grade.

Renaissance Learning is the company that we purchase the AR program from and they specifically state the same thing. It is not to be used as a grade.

I am saddened that so many students in Clovis Unified are unhappy and frustrated, when they should be enjoying this wonderful and effective program.
