As a 1987 graduate of McLane High School, I went to the recent homecoming game. I had heard some negative things about my alma mater, so I was curious to find out for myself what’s happening there.

Some things I noticed? Students were friendly and positive. The Hmong Club makes an awesome egg roll. The quad was full of benches and more than 100 trees; it was like being in a park. A large banner stated “Highlanders Never Quit!”

All of these things were great, so I did a little more investigating. McLane has retained more freshmen than ever before. Many teachers are so dedicated to McLane that they have stayed there despite opportunities to go elsewhere. More students are taking AP classes than ever before. Test scores have improved in seven of the last eight years.

Forget what you’ve heard about McLane. It is a great school! Thank you to the students, teachers and administrators who work so hard to make McLane successful. I’m proud to be a Highlander.
