Education of our children is the most important obligation of any society. They are our future. The promise we make to our children must force us to understand that each child has special needs.

The Bee’s editorial on the “Race to the Top” competitive grant programs [Oct. 19] struck a cord with me. As a retired primary teacher, I was fortunate to teach when the district valued their teachers and students by having music instruction (vocal and instrumental), full-time school librarians, physical education instructors and teaching aids in every classroom. The “Race to the Top,” I hope, will force the Fresno Unified School District to focus on student needs.

The reconstitution should be to provide the teaching assistance at the classroom level, the transformation should be a look at the compensation packages handed out like bonuses [letter “Hanson’s brilliance” Oct. 5], and the closure should be a community that speaks up for the needs of children by having a school board elected that focuses their attention on student progress.

It is time for Fresno Unified parents to speak up and shout out the praises for the quality teachers their children are privileged to know. They are the heart and soul of the district.
