Assembly Member Mike Villines’ Oct. 15 column, headlined “Red tape puts squeeze on small business” disappointed. The only example was that some restaurants have trouble scheduling staff. Scheduling breaks can be difficult. Good managers do this daily.
What is red tape? There are many opinions about minimum wages, environmental requirements, zoning and lighting restrictions, sanitation and inspection rules, payroll and sales taxes, paying employees, and who should be employed. I believe that businesses that collect sales taxes should follow the law, since it is not their money to keep. Social Security and Medicare taxes are a matter of law, and resolved huge arguments.
A 1986 law requires verification of employment eligibility. Employees should be paid correctly and on time. Business should profit without dumping all garbage and waste into the public’s land, air and water.
Experience shows that work breaks improve productivity. Zoning and sanitation regulations became statutory after the people found that businesses could not be relied on. Unregulated profit motive had resulted in the selling of unsafe products and fraudulent services from unsafe buildings with poor ventilation, lighting, traffic patterns, and neighborhood blight. Assembly Member Villines needs to list what specific “red tape” to eliminate and all supporting numbers.
