Recently, the city of Fresno kicked off its second Citizens Academy program for local residents. I applaud the city's effort to give citizens like me the opportunity to get directly involved with our government. The Citizens Academy allows us the opportunity to be a part of a cause that is greater than oneself.
Too many people in our city are tired of the same mounting community issues. Mayor Ashley Swearengin and her staff realize that government cannot change our city alone. They sincerely value the input from our citizens and community organizations.
The Academy provides us with a transparent view on the "state of the city." We are educated on how the public's monies are being spent, the functions of city departments and community issues related to water, homelessness, safety, etc. Some very valid questions are always raised during our question and answer sessions.
The Fresno Citizens Academy is a great experience. The most important part is educating ourselves for the common goal of changing lives. The Academy provides firsthand experience for those willing to work toward changing our community.
