Regarding the article, “DUIs will earn Tulare Co. drivers ignition locks,” Oct. 14: I wasn’t surprised to see The American Beverage Institute, a restaurant trade group, opposing Assembly Bill 91 that our governor signed into law.

This group stated that this bill should be reserved for repeat offenders. Quote, “We shouldn’t punish someone who had a sip of wine over the limit the same way as we punish hard-core criminals.”

The law is the law, and should apply to everyone. A “sip of wine” over the .08% legal limit may cause some person to lose their life or be permanently disabled.

We have made excuses, not respected the law, looked the other way and been so permissive the average person thinks he or she can commit irresponsible acts and not have to suffer the consequences.

My grandson was caught driving under the influence, and had to have an interlock system installed in his pickup. After paying the installation and the monthly monitoring fees, it made a lasting impression on him.

This is a great law! I thank Gov. Schwarzenegger.
