How is it possible that Valley farmers, some of California's most outspoken and powerful opponents of taxes and government interference in their business, are also some of the largest recipients of government entitlements?
We see the signs posted all over the Valley decrying the government for causing the drought. Every day we hear the farmers' cries, "give us back our water!"
It seems the farmers feel they are entitled to the water -- as much water as they want -- with no strings attached, water that is stored behind dams that were built by the government, delivered to them in canals and pipelines built and maintained by the government, and given to them for pennies on the dollar with subsidies paid for by the government.
I have to follow rules about water usage, watering my lawn only on selected days, and I have to pay full price for the water that I use. Farmers should either follow the same rules as everyone else and pay the same price for water as everyone else, or stop whining and be grateful for the generous handouts they receive from the government.
