Wow, if the recent opinions about the Civil War re-enactments are indicative of most Fresno residents, we must still be the Valley comedy that we’ve always been. No water, no crops, and darn it all, no Civil War re-enactments. But we did save the smelt!

“White guys dressing up and playing war!”

Allow me to explain. Civil war re-enactments happen all across the country, north and south. The issue was never to play war, but to remind all Americans of the awful sacrifices made on both sides of the war. We don’t need a Vietnam re-enactment, or a Battle of the Bulge re-enactment.

The Civil War re-enactments represent every monumental sacrifice made by all sides in all of our wars. It reminds us of the tragic price of our freedom and should remind us that true freedom is never guaranteed or ensured by sweet talking and conciliatory promises.

What purpose does our annual ceremonies serve on 9/11? Through the deaths of these thousands of innocent Americans, we gather and demonstrate a collective resolve to act as one nation to prevent it from happening again, ever.
