Kudos to 16-year-old Anne Johnson, whose letter regarding food sources was in the Oct. 3 Bee.
I befriended a 92-year-old neighbor in Mariposa, and last week she received, from one of the three food distributions she’s involved with, a large bag of sliced kiwi fruit. She called to say she had a “huge” bag of sliced kiwi fruit and wondered if I would like some. I normally don’t use a lot of kiwi fruit and, when I do, I buy it fresh.
I went over to see her, opened the bag for her and had difficulty determining if the kiwi fruit had been freeze-dried, dried, frozen or whatever. In my estimation, it was not edible. She placed one slice under the tap to moisten it; decided it wasn’t tasty. All the writing/messages on the bag were in Spanish. The bag didn’t even say where it was grown or packaged. The only thing we could read was it was good until Oct. 9. She ended up throwing it away!
I surely hope people are listening to Ms. Johnson’s message.
